The pace bowler has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.
The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.
There were concerns that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.
Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches set to start on 21 November in Perth.
The selector shared that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the prospects of being involved.
"It's clear that the clock is ticking and there are permutations around that, aside from the physical problem, but further aspects," he commented.
"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a key capacity. With luck from the opening match. If not, then we'll pick it up."
Past Concerns
The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India last month after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.
Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of three Australian summers in a limited period.
The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the Ashes.
Bailey noted that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the first Test.
Backup Options
In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.
All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a safety move because of soreness in his side.
Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and stated that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."
"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the initial game as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.
"He was only going to play the starting games anyway. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
