Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for an extended period when numerous of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Recent incidents in nearby states have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
